Profiles of Organizations

Write a summary of an organization that is working on the issue you are researching, or an organization that is taking an approach to another issue that you think would be a good model for the issue you are working on. What is the organization’s mission? What populations or communities does it serve? Who is involved in the work? What strategies does the organization use? Discuss what  you think is most interesting or compelling about the work this organization is doing. Be sure to include a link to the organization’s website.

  1. The Black Star Project was started in 1996 to help eliminate the racial achievement gap within schools. While the organization helps any student, they mainly focus on Black and Latino students in low achieving, low income areas. The project helps different communities from all over the nation, especially in the Chicago area and looks at all levels of education from preschool to college. The belief of the organization is that the best indicator for success in child is the environment that he/she lives in. With this in mind they try to help schools by focusing on the community and strengthening the connections within it. They help increase involvement in the students’ lives and school from families and school faculty. They also have a variety of programs including college fairs, school safety programs, parent engagements programs, education enrichment programs, and mentoring/tutoring programs.

    I thought this organization was compelling because its strategies and tactics were reminiscent of the solutions that Maire Dugan proposed in her article, “A Nested Theory of Conflict,” which was one of the scholarly journals I looked at. She proposed breaking down conflicts/problems into different levels and urged people to combat these problems at a subsystem/local level. She used schools as an example and how problems like racism in schools can be fought by having everyone at the local level play a role in the solution. Instead of trying to tackle the problem as a whole it helps to create easier to accomplish solutions that start to have immediate effects at a local level. The Black Star Project does this by focusing on communities and the relationships within them, as opposed to trying to tackle the whole problem on a national level, not to say that this approach is not important, but there needs to be a good balance of both.

    1. I like your statement about Maire Dugan. I also like the way how she will finish the racism by different education roles and combine that with the relationship within the communities.

    2. This is a cool project trying to further the education of the black community. It’s good to see they are being propelled further and given opportunities to learn and have avenues for new jobs. Great write up

  2. Reflecting back on the topic of week 10, I am choosing a Palestinian rights group, Defense for Children Internal Palestine (DCI-Palestine). Though there are many organizations, this one partial to children reflects the impacts of future generations. It’s an advocate for children affected by the Israeli occupation in the West Bank and Gaza. The mission behind DCI-Palestine is to ensure humanitarian aid, equality for citizens, political support and guidance. The organization is designed to target children who are often misplaced, mistreated, and not provided basic necessities, even schooling. It is an established assembly, with chapters all over America, consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, UNICEF, UNESCO, and the Council of Europe. The vision behind the movement is to ensure independence, respect and dignity, and justice to children who are and could be victims of discrimination due to Israeli occupation. Often times these children are left out of vital operations that can lead to a better future from schooling, growth and developmental programs, and other general interests that are vital for Palestinian children who witnessed war and Israeli occupation first hand.
    DCI-Palestine focuses on children aged 12-17 and look for responsible advocates and institutions to assist with the programs they fund through donations. They promote and are heavily involved in legislation, policy, advocacy, lobbying, litigation, legal services and many other strategies to raise inequality awareness to young Palestinian children. DCI-Palestine supplies contemporary data showing how many children are dying, detained, victims of war and settler violence. The most fascinating thing they do is in cases where children are used as ‘human shields’ by the Israeli army, they take these cases to court and in 2005, they won. Unfortunately that was the last time a case was ever charged against the Israeli’s, but it shows the determination and accountability they try to aggressively pursue. They show 28 cases where they try to take the case to court, of course since then they haven’t charged them with anything more because it will give the army bad press. None the less, the children can rest assure that DCI-Palestine will provide resources and support they can count on.

    1. I totally understand your point about how Palestinians do not have an army. Rockets are regularly fired from Gaza to Israel. Palestinian are living in a harsh condition including little children. I really like how you focused on the impacts of the future generation of this nation.

It is good to see that there is a group that advocates for children, with all of the violence and conflicts that go on nowadays it seems that many organizations do not do the best job of giving the victims they fight for an actual face. Taking the child angle also helps gain support not only for this specific cause, but for organizations that deal with this conflict on a larger scope. It makes people who read the news think twice about what they are reading, these are not just faceless people, but children.

  3. My research is about technology and what are the global inequalities towards it. First of all, the organization that I am looking at is the National Bureau of Economic Research which stated that investing in technology companies or organizations is great, but if no one in the company knows how to use it then the investment goes down to drain. The organization needs to make sure that the employee receives the necessary training, practice skills, and support to build a technology structure. Before anyone make an investment in technology one needs to discuss it with the company’s employee because they will be the one using the systems. Before investing one needs to invest and find the ways and what their thoughts and concerns are and make them apart of your process, so they will not end up fighting to get them to use it. The organization does invest in technologies that they expect will make the most difference. This site is a good model for the assignment I am working on because this link explains how the recent increase in inequalities is mostly due to speeding up the skills bias. The National Bureau of Economic Research’s main goal and mission is to focused on how change has been important in the rise of inequalities because globally this issue play a main role the major driving force behind the changes in the United State wage structure is technology. The increasing demands for skills and the inequalities in the United States economy maybe as much attribute to the changes in the organization production as to the direct effect of new technologies. This organization serves for the people who are low-skill workers, college graduates, and high school graduates. This organization goals are to build on the notion of technology skill complementarily technical change favors, and giving employees technology related training. This organization also uses the strategies to describe the links between technology and trade, technology and change in the organization of production and the interaction among technical changes and in the labor market institutions. The one thing that interests me was this organization is doing a good job because they are giving chances to the low-skill workers to improve their wages as well as their technology skills. These are the main reasons for cross- country differences in inequality trends. This is the link to this site

    1. This organization brings up a good point, its not just enough to spread the technology and make it more accessible/available, people need to know how to use it or there is still the problem of inequality that comes with technology.

    2. This is an interesting topic considering I’ve never thought about the basic skill sets needed by average workers. Potentially these workers may only hold a GED or high school diploma and never learned about further techniques, technologies and basic work skill sets required in the modern era. It’s alarming though that more people don’t harness these skills and apply them sometimes what appears to be simple jobs. Good write up!

  4. I chose FAIR, which stands for Federal for American Immigration Reform. It’s an organization that’s located in DC and its mission is to improve border security, stop illegal immigration, and to promote immigration levels consistent with the national interest according to their website. They also want to inform the American people on how immigration affects the U.S. and to advocate immigration policies that will serve American environmental, societal, and economic interests now and for the future. On the website it states that they have more than 250,000 members and supporters nationwide, whose membership ranges from liberal to conservative. It serves the community as well as academics and government officials. FAIR states, “national and international media regularly turn to us to understand the latest immigration developments and to shed light on this complex subject. FAIR has been called to testify on immigration bills before Congress more than any organization in America”. FAIR claims to serve the interest of the American people. Strategies the organization use is by being proactive and going on talk shows and being interviewed regarding immigration. They also testify before Congress on immigration-related legislations. Daniel Stein is the President of this organization and is an attorney who previously worked for 35 years in immigration law and reform. Julie Alexrod is the government relations counsel and Mellisa Bradley is the membership services coordinator. What I found interesting about this organization is that they have a lot of support, they currently have 294,582 FaceBook likes and seems to be very proactive in their mission. They also seem to be getting a lot of media exposure, and were interviewed by CNN, ABC, NBC, New York Times, etc.
