Profiles of Organizations

Write a summary of an organization that is working on the issue you are researching, or an organization that is taking an approach to another issue that you think would be a good model for the issue you are working on. What is the organization’s mission? What populations or communities does it serve? Who is involved in the work? What strategies does the organization use? Discuss what  you think is most interesting or compelling about the work this organization is doing. Be sure to include a link to the organization’s website.

  1. The Transgender, Gender Variant, and Intersex (TGI) Project focuses on the survival and freedom of TGI people on welfare, in detention facilities and in shelters.
The organization works with others to fight against imprisonment, police brutality, racism, poverty, and pressures in society. They seek freedom of expression, gender justice, and challenge to end the human rights abuses committed against TGI people in California prisons and beyond. The organization has received much recognition due to their work so they receive several letters on a daily basis from TGI and non-TGI prisoners asking for research, support, advice and legal counseling and TGI project responds to each one of these letters. Along with answering to the needs of TGI inmates and visiting them in prison, the organization publishes a monthly newsletter about coordination of TGI inmates. They also advocate and educate the public on the failures of the prison industrial complex and work with their allies to find alternatives that would provide real safety to the community. Advocacy campaigning and capacity building training and workshops are some strategies they use to help further their mission.
The TGI Project staff ranges from queer former prisoners, to trans people of color and everywhere in between. Many of the staff have first hand experience when it comes to discrimination, racism, prison abuses, poverty, and violence therefore can help provide ultimate first hand knowledge when needed. This is something I find extremely interesting and compelling because they are well aware of what one may be talking about when speaking of their struggles. This very small grassroots organization works to help improve the DAILY lives of TGI people and by default, these actions could and hope to transform the entire economic, legal, and prison systems. This can be referred to as the “trickle up” change, which is why I admire the work of this organization.

    1. Hi Leticia,

I really enjoyed reading your post. This is a really fascinating organization. It is really interesting that they are dealing with the daily lives of TGI people rather than the overall end product because it is the day-to-day aspects which matter so much. I really respect what this organization is doing. I especially liked how this organization was not just receiving letters from to TGI inmates but also non-TGI inmates and is even sending individual letters back to these people filled with advise, encouragement, etc. I am really excited to hear more about your topic during our project meeting today!

    2. Leticia,
Good choice of organization that works on TGI welfare. As Rachael also mentioned, it is interesting that this organization receives letters from both TGI and non-TGI prisoners asking for advise and support in a daily basis. I indeed admire this organization’s effort to not only answer these letters, but also visiting inmates in prisons to better understand and address their needs. This organization adapted great strategies in order to accomplish their mission. However, I believe educating the public among other strategies is the most effective approach to help TGI people and provide safety in the community.

  2. Out & Equal Workplace Advocates is a non-profit organization in the United States committed to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) workplace equality. Out & Equal collaborates with Fortune 1000 companies and government agencies to provide a supportive environment for LGBT employees. Out & Equal’s mission is to “Educate and empower organizations, human resource professionals, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and individual employees through programs and services that result in equal policies, opportunities, practices, and benefits in the workplace regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, expression, or characteristics.”
Out & Equal annually holds a training event called the “Workplace Summit” in different locations around the United States. The Workplace Summit hosts thousands of LGBT employees, human resource professionals and organizational representatives each year for a few days of training and networking. Workplace Summit includes the Workplace Awards called “The Outies” which is an award ceremony intended at recognizing leaders in LGBT workplace equality. Moreover, in 2012 Out & Equal held their first international Summit in London which brought together people from around the world to consider ways to build greater equality in the workplace for LGBT people and their allies.
Out & Equal offers diversity training, educational resources and consulting services to senior management, human resource professionals, employee resource groups and individual employees to promote LGBT workplace equality. The training programs include “Train the Trainer,” “Building Bridges,” “LGBT Diversity Training,” and “Transgender Intensive.”
To me, the most interesting point about the Out & Equal organization is its annual Workplace Summit where employees and experts from around the world gather to share strategies and the best practices to create workplace equality regardless of the workers’ sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions.

    1. Hi Fardad,

I really enjoyed reading your post. This is an interesting organization. It is really fascinating what they are doing on the global level. I thought it was very interesting about the first international summit in London and how many people around the world attended. This organization seems like they are doing a lot in this subject area by hosting workshops, summits, etc. and trying to make a difference in the workplace for LGBT equality. I am really excited to hear more about your topic during our project meeting today!

    2. Hi Fardad,
Great choice on an organization that works to achieve equality within the workplace. This is something that all employees, companies and organizations should aim for. I really liked how they have training sessions, consulting services and the Workplace Summit that help build equality for all within the workplace. Great job!

  3. UN Women is an intergovernmental organization that is working on the issue that I am researching. This organization approaches a general aspect of gender justice and equality, by which I will be able to shed light on a different aspect of this issue of gender justice and equality. It is a section of the UN that was created in 2010 by the United Nations General Assembly. This organization’s mission is to promote women’s empowerment, advance gender equality in countries, and eliminate discrimination against women and girls around the globe. It serves many populations and communities around the world by bringing awareness, knowledge, and technical and financial support. It is aimed towards helping women and girls in countries where the options for them is few, whether it is by empowering them, promoting gender equality, or trying to eliminate discrimination. This organization is specifically catering towards lesser-developed countries where women are a particularly vulnerable population. People that are particularly interested in gender equality, women empowerment, and eliminating discrimination of women are involved with this organization. UN Women also involves both genders that believe in the mission as well as government officials, celebrities, people that are affected by gender inequality and many others that take a special interest in this topic. This organization uses many strategies to further their mission. UN Women is a basis for many other organizations and movements that promote their main mission. As it is an intergovernmental organization, it uses the many government entities to be able to bring its mission to many countries, not just specifically third world countries. It also spreads its mission by bringing knowledge, which in turn helps the socio-economics of the countries being served, thus further promoting the organization’s mission. UN Women is an organization branch of a bigger international organization, the UN, which is consisted of powerful governments that have a considerable influence over the rest of the world. This organization also consists not just of one organization but rather a main organization that is supporting many movements around the globe. This involves the social movement that I want to also concentrate on with my topic: HeForShe. I find this movement to be most interesting and compelling work that this organization is doing. HeForShe is a solidarity movement that is for gender equality. This movement addresses how the history of this movement for gender equality was a battle that was led by women, for women. It also shows that more men have begun addressing this issue of gender equality in recent years. This movement calls for both genders to unify, asking for one gender to help support the other gender in order for it to better off mankind. This movement has been spread all around the global, with women and men standing up for gender equality. This movement is just one of many that have been initiated by UN Women. Overall, UN Women is making a great impact with gender equality globally, but there is still a lot to accomplish if we are to see gender justice around the world.

    1. Rachael,
Thank you for sharing information about the UN Women organization. I think this organization has a great mission to develop gender equality, women empowerment, and eliminate gender discrimination especially in less developed countries. It is interesting that in addition to men and women who are interested in gender equality or affected by gender inequality, government officials and celebrities are involved in this organization. I think because this organization is a branch of the UN, it plays a central role in gender equality in the globe. I also appreciate the information you provided about the activities of HeForShe solidarity movement for gender justice as a movement initiated by UN Women.

    2. Hi Rachael,
Great job on your post. I really enjoyed reading your summary and comments on UN Women, a really well-known organization. We’ve been seeing UN Women in the news recently and I think they could provide a lot of resources for you when researching about your topic. Overall I find it to be a very credible and impacting organization. Great job!
